Gresham High School Theatre Arts Department

Theatre Arts Handbook

“The stage is not merely the meeting place of all the arts but it is also the return of art to life.” - Oscar Wilde

GOAL

The Gresham High School Theatre Arts Department's goal is to create an environment that is welcoming and engaging to all of its members. Our department provides for the development of imaginative, purposeful, and skilled expression in the theatre, and for students' artistic, intellectual, and personal growth. It is a place where the students can explore, develop and find their imagination, talents and creativity without feeling judged, labeled or threatened. We hope to form a bond that enables each member to be an equal part of our department.

PHILOSOPHY

The Gresham High School Theatre Arts Department shall be dedicated to furthering the educational experience of its members through extracurricular involvement. The department shall give the theatre students a forum for sharing theater expertise and to socialize and work with others with the same interest. It will accomplish this goal by providing the students a creative outlet to perform, create and gain recognition of their talents in theatre. It shall provide guest artists and associates to train and inform students.

The department shall increase interest in theatre by involving more students, staff and community members with each coming year. It shall provide Gresham with a group of performers to inform, enthuse, and entertain in the community and school district at activities, special events and assemblies. The department shall strive for excellence in all of its many facets, but shall always make the main stage productions a priority. Its leaders shall make every effort to provide members with ample opportunity to participate and enjoy the many events offered throughout the year. Most of all, members shall always remember to celebrate and appreciate their art and to continue to develop and improve the Theatre Arts department.

STANDARDS

All members of Gresham High School Theatre Productions are required to maintain the academic and disciplinary standards as outlined in the Gresham High School Student Handbook. Failure to maintain the outlined standards, regardless of whether or not those standards are directly applied to theatre, may result in removal from the current production or any future productions or theatre event.

The Theatre Arts department philosophy is when being involved with extra curricular activities Health, Family, and Academics come first before any activity. However we hold our students responsible when they make a commitment to follow through with their obligations. When students volunteer to be involved with a production on stage or backstage by auditioning or interviewing for a position they are making a commitment to all who are involved in the Theatre production. When a student does not fulfill their obligations others have to do their job and work harder to make up for their absence and the production suffers.  Also after a student has been trained in an area it may be a safety issue to have a last minute replacement. We rely on the students to follow through with their duties so that everyone involved can have a safe and productive experience.

Students are encouraged to experience all that Gresham High School has to offer and we will try to accommodate schedules so students can participate in other programs as desired. Appropriate compromises will be given with regard to students who participate in multiple activities. Students, parents, advisers and coaches will identify and try to work out any conflicts and accommodate student’s commitments to each activity.

Incentive Points
Incentive points are the homework for our drama classes. They must be done outside of class time. You may pick from a range of projects (points) or activities (hours). 8 hours per 6 weeks or 200 points for an A grade in the incentive point section of the grade. Activities are approximately 25 points per hour.

Students may choose to read 2 plays and write 2 play reports every six weeks or participate at a work party on a crew or take part in a range of extra curricular activities.

Incentive points have two components: the activity portion where the student reads or performs and the written portion where student writes a play report or a reflection. Students must type their incentive points in a two page paper and turn it in with their notebooks every six weeks.

Extra incentive points may be used to make up participation points, group performances points and notebook points, but not term project points. This applies to excused absences only.

All points must be earned during the term in which the grade is being given. No holding over points for the next term or counting last years or summer projects.

A schedule will be set and posted on the website and bulletin board. Rehearsal times are Monday – Friday from 3:00 to 6:30. The schedule will indicate when specific roles or choral groups need to be at rehearsal. During this time, leads may have rehearsal 4 to 5 times a week and smaller roles and choral groups may only have rehearsals 3 or more times a week. It will all depend on the needs of their role. Also, to provide time to do a complete run through, or work on particularly difficult scenes there may be rehearsals on Fridays when school is out. A rehearsal schedule will be kept on the website. The schedule is always subject to change, and changes will be posted via website and posted on the bulletin board at school by Monday morning.

Saturday Work Parties
It is a part of the obligation of being
in a production and a requirement for all cast and crew to attend Saturday work parties. Students create skills and friendships and a sense of accomplishment and pride when they are involved with the creation of the production. They also create a significant connection with adults learning skills and developing their talents. All parents are encouraged to attend and participate. There are several great reasons for you and your child to attend these Saturdays including creating great friendships, memories and life time skills.

Production Week Rehearsals
Rehearsals during Production Week are runs of the show and/or dress rehearsals. Rehearsals during production week can sometimes start right after school and go until 10:30 p.m. No student may miss any part of any of these rehearsals or may face removal from the show.

Rehearsal Standards
Students must wear appropriate attire for rehearsals and work parties. Students must have clothes and shoes (no open-toed shoes or sandals should be worn at rehearsal or work party ever) that allow them to move and work onstage and will keep them warm in the cold theater. Students MUST turn off all cell phones during rehearsals, work parties, techs, dresses, performances, and strikes. Students are not to be talking on or using their cell phones during the rehearsal OR Performance time-period. All students are required to be on time for rehearsals and work parties. Please limit contacting students for emergencies only during rehearsals and performances.

Production Absences

All time conflicts given to directors before casting will not be considered as absences and student will be cast based on this information. Student will also have one excused absence but no unexcused absences for both rehearsals and Saturday work parties. Emergencies, illnesses and extenuating circumstances will be considered at the discretion of the director. A conflict sheet will be available at the audition and crew interviews for students to list conflicts. Any conflicts not listed on the conflict form will not be recognized. Students are required to attend a full day of school to be allowed to rehearse or perform. Prearranged excused absences for doctor or dentist appointments are allowed however discouraged on days of a performance.

Strike
All members of Gresham High School Theatre production are required to participate in strike. Parents are encouraged to come to the Strike.

CREW PROCEDURES

Application Procedure
Students apply for
crew by filling out an application form and interviewing with a student Department Head. There will be sign up sheets on the bulletin board for interviews. Students are encouraged to apply for crew positions even if student does not have any experience or skills in that area. All that is needed is an interest in being involved and a commitment to the production. Department Heads apply for positions by interviewing with Director and Technical director. Students applying for a Department Head should have previous experience on that crew. Department Heads should bring an application form to the interview. Directors and Department Heads will appoint students based on their conflict sheet and application form. Students must know their conflicts before applying for a crew position because once they are appointed they can only have one excused absence.

Attendance Policy

Missing all or part of any Saturday Work Parties is to be avoided and only prearranged excused absences are to be considered. Missing Run Throughs, Dress Rehearsals and Performances are strictly prohibited and only extreme circumstances will be considered. There is one excused absence and no unexcused absences for both rehearsals and Saturday work parties. Emergencies, illnesses and extenuating circumstances will be considered at the discretion of the director. All time conflicts given to directors before casting will not be considered as absences and student will be appointed based on this information. Students are required to attend a full day of school to be allowed to attend rehearsals or performances. Prearranged excused absences for doctor or dentist appointments are allowed on rehearsal days however discouraged especially on days of a performance. An unexcused absence will automatically dismiss student from position and student will lose the incentive and thespian points. A student dismissed from a position will significantly impinge on their opportunity to participate in the future.

There are no fees connected to participating in a crew however a production t-shirt or hoodie is optional.

Saturday Work Parties

Saturday work parties are where the students will be creating the production aspects of the show. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child and participate in the creation of the production. Students are required to check in and out with the assistant directors. There will be adequate supervision of students during the day however the directors cannot assume responsibility for student’s actions once they leave the school campus before, during, or after the work parties. Students will be working with department heads, assistant directors, parent volunteers and production associates, the technical director and the director. Students may have the opportunity to go with parent volunteers or student managers to go on errands such as posting posters, gathering props or supplies. If the student cannot go in student or parent volunteer’s vehicle please state so on crew contract. In case of emergency parents will be contacted immediately and first aide will be applied.

Grade & Drug Policy
Students will earn passing grades,
attend school and be in good academic standing to qualify for crew position. Students are expected to make school their priority and need to do their homework before participating at the work parties. Student will not be able to attend work parties, rehearsals and performances if student is not passing all of their classes.
